Success at Great Taste Awards 2022!

We are incredibly proud of our range of sustainable products! In total we have won FOUR stars across 3 products at the 2022 Great Taste Awards for our Farrington’s Mellow Yellow products this year. The judges have awarded an incredible 2 stars Great Taste award to our versatile Cold Pressed Rapeseed Oil! For most products, this is their second, or even third Great Taste award but for our Smoked Oil, this is the first time it has been awarded a Great Taste star and we couldn’t be happier!

The Great Taste awards are the world’s largest and most trusted food and drink awards, with a panel of over 500 experts judging each product, being described as the ‘Oscars of the food world’. This year, 12,366 food and drink products entered into these prestigious awards, with only the very best products being awarded the coveted stars.

Here’s what the judges had to say about our products:

Cold Pressed Rapeseed Oil – 2 stars: Liquid Gold! A pleasingly golden oil, lightly aromatic, clean and fresh, nutty with light brassica notes. The texture was rich and smooth. The flavour although subtle, was wonderfully nutty and buttery. Very well done.

Honey & Mustard Dressing – 1 star: Glistening dressing with mustard seeds evident and glorious wafts of rapeseed oil. We loved the nutty rich flavour from the oil and thought the sweetness of the honey balanced so well with the bright acidity. Tastes fresh and home made.

Oak Smoked Rapeseed Oil – 1 star: Delicious oil well crafted and produced. This beautiful clear, golden oil almost glistens in the glass. There is a smoky, herbaceous aroma. On tasting it is clean and creamy so it fills the mouth and the gentle smokiness comes through very well and lingers on the finish.

The judges have awarded a 1 star Great Taste award to each of our Classic Vinaigrette, Honey & Mustard Dressing, Balsamic Vinegar Dressing, Chilli Oil, Mayonnaise and Garlic Mayonnaise. For most products, this is their second, or even third Great Taste award but for our Chilli Oil, this is the first time it has been awarded a Great Taste star and we couldn’t be happier!

Here’s what the judges had to say about our products:

Chilli Oil: A wonderful colour and clarity. The nuttiness of the oil is retained and a subtle hint of chilli makes a wonderful condiment for cooking.

Balsamic Dressing: Lovely fruity sweetness that lifted the palette.

Classic Vinaigrette: Herbs add to the complexity of flour with all the ingredients working in harmony.

Honey & Mustard Dressing: The honey flavour balances well with the mustard. Love the ‘pop’ of the mustard seeds too.

Mayonnaise: A very good colour, and the rapeseed oil really works well here. It’s light and creamy textured, and well seasoned with a light hand.

Garlic Mayonnaise: Good clean creamy mayo with a well-judged hint of garlic. Lovely richness and mouthfeel.

Great Taste Awards 2010

We are delighted that our Classic Vinaigrette has been awarded the top three-star gold award and our mayonnaise a one star gold in the recent Great Taste Awards 2010. All entries are subjected to rigorous taste tests by some of the most demanding panels of experts – out of over 6000 entries, only 92 were awarded the three star Gold award. Northamptonshire’s Finest!

We were delighted to scoop Runner Up prize for Best Local Product at the Northamptonshire Food and Drink Awards 2009, held at Holdenby House last week. The judges included celebrity chef Sophie Grigson, Michelin-starred Aday Gray, chef Stephen Bulmer (all long term Mellow Yellow fans) and of course, the general public! Although a national brand, Mellow Yellow is proud of its roots and didn’t mind coming second to local butcher Sauls of Spratton’s excellent potted beef, especially as they do, of course stock Mellow Yellow!

Farming update

As you will no doubt be aware, we are Britain’s original “seed to bottle” producer. We are pleased to report that although many people are complaining that they have not had a summer, this year’s harvest has been considerably drier and therefore easier than last year! Our LEAF marque rape was all harvested a few weeks ago and is ready to press, on demand to ensure the freshest product for you and your customers.

We’re pleased to announce that Farrington’s Mellow Yellow has just won Silver in the Best UK Food category of the Daily Telegraph’s 2007 Taste of Britain awards.

Duncan and Eli collected the award last week at a ceremony held at Highgrove, The Prince of Wales’ family home. They were treated to a splendid buffet lunch featuring many of the award winners, and Duncan particularly liked the Doddington dairy heather honey ice cream.

The salad dressings arrive shortly…

The first 1,000 bottles of our award winning salad dressing (Farrington’s Mellow Yellow Blackberry Vinegar Dressing and Farrington’s Mellow Yellow Blackberry Vinegar Dressing) will be available by the end of October. We are now taking orders! Each dressing comes in a 250 ml bottle, 6 to a case, and the minimum order will be for two cases (which could be one of each dressing). Prices are:

Trade price £2.63 per bottle, which is £15.78 per case. This price includes delivery. The recommended retail price is £3.50 per bottle.

Please note that the salad dressings are currently only available from us at present!

Nigella Lawson. Our latest convert?

An observant viewer of BBC 2’s ‘Nigella Express’, (who was, unusually, not interested in either the presenter or the recipe) spotted a bottle of Mellow Yellow in Nigella Lawson’s kitchen recently. This sighting has since been confirmed by other viewers.

We assume she uses Mellow Yellow, and it’s not just there for decorative effect.

Farrington Oils on TV…

A few weeks ago a film crew visited us here at Bottom Farm and spent a couple of days filming the production process and some of the personalities. The programme is part of the ‘Country Lives’ series on ITV Central and will be shown on Thursday 25 October at 7.30pm. We understand that it will be repeated at a later date.
