At Farrington’s Mellow Yellow we carry out around 39 quality checks on every bottle of oil or salad dressing we make, ensuring only the very best is good enough. Simple pure Mellow Yellow pleasure!
What does Cold Pressed mean?
- Cold Pressed is the process of gently mechanically squeezing a seed or fruit to extract oil without the use of heat, so that the pure oil is extracted in its most natural form and is not damaged in any way during the process.
- We call it the ‘Process Of No Process’
Is Farrington’s Mellow Yellow GMO free?
- Absolutely! There is no GM (genetically modified) rapeseed grown in the UK. Mellow Yellow is 100% GM free as is all British grown and produced Cold Pressed Rapeseed Oil.
Why should I choose Mellow Yellow Cold Pressed rapeseed oil over other oils?
- Mellow Yellow rapeseed oil is a fantastic product with some amazing benefits including:
- Lowest Saturated fat content compared to other culinary oils at 6%.
- Is rich in Omega-3 essential oil, ten times more than olive oil.
- Higher smoke point at 230℃. Rapeseed is the only high temperature oil rich in Omega-3.
- Has the perfect ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 at 2:1 as required for our diets.
- An excellent source of vitamins E, K and Provitamin A.
- Double the amount of plant sterols compared to olive oil, to help regulate cholesterol.

Why our LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming) credentials matter.
- LEAF principles encourage Regenerative Farming practices, through Integrated Farm Management which are aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
- This means that you can buy Mellow Yellow products with the knowledge that they have been sustainably produced with the utmost care for the environment.
Is Cold-Pressed rapeseed oil bad for you and does it cause inflammation?
- No. It is actually the opposite as the ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 in cold pressed rapeseed oil, along with the lutein and other carotenoid contents, actively play an important role in anti-inflammation.
- Other seed oils such as sunflower or sesame seed oils for example have inflammatory properties as they are high in Omega-6 with little or no Omega-3.
I thought Omega-6 was bad for you?
- Omega-6 is an essential fatty acid along with Omega-3 that plays a crucial role in brain and other metabolic functions. It can be considered ‘bad’ when eaten in excess as it can cause inflammation.
- However, cold pressed rapeseed oil has a near perfect ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 around 2:1 which provides our bodies with exactly what it needs.
- So; Omega-6 is an important part of everyone’s diets but not in excess. Cold pressed rapeseed oil with its near perfect ratio helps to promote a healthier lifestyle instead.
What’s the difference between refined (standard) and cold pressed oils?
- Most culinary oils are refined in an industrial process using a combination of high temperatures, chemicals, acids and water.
- These industrial processes lose much of the quality, nutrition, flavour and colour of the original oils.
- Refined olive oil is referred to as light, mild, or pomace oil.
- Mellow Yellow is a cold pressed rapeseed oil; we simply mechanically press the best quality seeds without any heat, filter and bottle the pure oil ready for you to enjoy.
- Cold pressing retains the best nutrition, flavour and characteristics of the oil.
- We call this ‘the process of no process’.
Are all Seed oils bad for me?
- No! Like the majority of food products, no oil on its own is bad for you, but some oils are better than others. It is suggested that seed oils are bad because they cause inflammation or are highly processed.
- Rapeseed oil is very healthy, with half of the saturated fat of olive oil, rich in omega-3 and has a perfect omega-3 to omega-6 balance.
- The Mellow Yellow cold pressed ‘process of no process’ retains all its natural plant sterols, vitamins and other nutrients, which are otherwise lost in refined oils.
- Some seed oils such as sesame or sunflower seed oils do have a high content of omega-6 with little or no omega-3, which is linked to inflammation and other health concerns in excess consumption.
- Rice bran oil can only be obtained through a highly processed form using chemical extraction.
I’ve heard rapeseed oil contains Erucic acid, which is bad for me.
- Erucic acid is a bitter-tasting, fatty acid, found in many green plants, including broccoli, kale and cabbage.
- Mellow Yellow contains in the region of less than 0.02% - a result of the rigorous testing we carry out to ensure the best tasting oil before we press a single drop.
- There has been speculation on the negative effects of erucic acid on human health originating from some flawed scientific research in the 1970s, although no confirmed negative health effects have been seen in humans.
- Traditional varieties of rapeseed contained higher levels of erucic acid, however nowadays many varieties of rapeseed oil are naturally bred with lower levels of erucic acid (with a legal maximum level of under 2% for culinary rapeseed oil) to take away the bitter taste, resulting in a more subtle, nutty flavour.
- Studies have shown that small quantities of Erucic acid in our diet actually have some health benefits including anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer properties.
Is Mellow Yellow rapeseed oil the same as Canola oil?
- No. Canola is a trade name – Canadian Oil Low Acid – as it is called predominantly in North America.
- It is often genetically modified.
- It is also predominantly a refined oil, that has been hot pressed and chemically extracted.
- Mellow Yellow Cold Pressed Rapeseed Oil is just that; pure, cold pressed, unrefined, non-Genetically Modified, British rapeseed oil. Making it the perfect choice for your kitchen!
